In brief
  • Your ICP describes the type of company that gets the most value from your solution, and gives you the most value back
  • Firmographics, behaviour and challenges are all part of a useful ICP
  • Look at your best existing customers to find patterns
  • A sharp ICP makes marketing, sales and meeting booking significantly more effective

Without a clear ideal customer profile (ICP), most B2B companies spend too much time on leads that should never have been prioritised in the first place. A sharp ICP is not a nice-to-have; it is the foundation that all your lead generation, meeting booking and content should be built on.

What exactly is an ICP?

Your ideal customer profile describes the type of company that gets the most value from what you offer, and that also gives you the most value back in the form of revenue, loyalty and strong references. It is not a description of "anyone who might conceivably buy". It is a tightly defined description of who you should be spending your time on.

Three layers of a useful ICP

  • Firmographics: industry, company size, geography and revenue
  • Behaviour: how they research, which channels they use and what their buying process typically looks like
  • Challenges: the concrete problems your solution actually solves for them

How to find the patterns

Do not start by guessing. Start by looking back. Which of your current customers are the most satisfied, buy the most and stay the longest? Look for common traits in industry, size and the challenge they came to you with. Those patterns are often a far better guide than a theoretical exercise on a whiteboard.

  • List your 10-15 best existing customers
  • Identify common traits in industry, size and organisation
  • Map the challenge that made them look for a solution like yours
  • Write the profile concretely enough that a whole team can use it to prioritise leads

Why it pays off

With a sharp ICP the whole chain becomes more effective: marketing can target content and advertising precisely, sales can prioritise the right leads first, and meeting booking delivers far higher quality in the meetings that land in the calendar. It is often the single exercise with the biggest impact on your lead generation, before you even touch tools or automation.
